The primary focus of this modeling activity has been to study energy–economy interactions and impacts. On the other hand, we are witnessing a global trend of energy planning efforts, increasingly focusing on low-carbon–economy interactions. The renewed concerns about climate change and energy security pose unique modeling challenges.
The interactions between the energy system and the economy are becoming ever more complex. Therefore investigation of the development of energy system i.e.
the complex of production, transport, distribution and utilization of energy, must be closely bound with investigation of the superior systea of the national economy. This paper presents a critical review of some of the more recent models, and draws some conclusions on the actual and potential contribution of energy modelling in energy policy formulation.
The first part of the paper presents a conceptual framework for energy-economy interactions. The process is described and key parameters are identified. This model, while being a highly stylized representation of the complex energy-economy interactions, nevertheless provides an interesting frame work for energy policy analysis in developing countries.
